Julián Bautista

Julián Bautista (born April 21, 1901 in Madrid , Spain ; † July 8, 1961 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) was an Argentine composer of Spanish origin.

Life

Bautista had his first piano lessons with Pilar Fernández de la Mora . From the age of fourteen he studied composition at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música y Declamación de Madrid with Conrado del Campo . At the age of nineteen he made his debut as a composer and received a national prize in 1922 and 1926 for his first and second string quartet respectively. He has also conducted the Orquesta Nacional de España , the Philharmonic and the Madrid Symphony Orchestra.

Following the example of the French Groupe des Six , he founded the Grupo de los Ocho and Grupo de Madrid in 1930 with Del Campo students Salvador Bacarisse , Fernando Remacha , Juan José Mantecón and Gustavo Durán as well as Rosita García Ascot , Rodolfo Halffter and Gustavo Pittaluga . In 1932 and 1933, Bautista received first prizes at the Concurso Internacional de Unión Radio . In 1935 he became professor for harmony at the Conservatorio Nacional, in 1937 spokesman for the Consejo Central de la Música founded by the Ministry of Education .

In 1938 the International Society for New Music performed his composition Tres Ciudades at the London Music Festival. In the same year he won first prize at the Concurs International de Composition Musicale .

After Francisco Franco came to power and the end of the second Spanish republic , Bautista went into exile first in Brussels and then in Buenos Aires . Here he received awards from the Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de la Argentina in 1943 and 1944 , of which he became a member in 1944. He received further prizes from the Academy in 1947, 1951 and 1954. In 1957 he was a member of the Argentine delegation at the second Latin American Music Festival in Caracas, alongside Juan José Castro and Roberto García Morillo . In 1958 he became a member of the Fondo Nacional de las Artes under the direction of Juan Carlos Pinasco .

In 1959, Bautista was next to Juan José Castro, Roberto García Morillo , Roberto Kinsky and Erwin Leuchter a juror in the composition competition for chamber orchestras organized by the Asociación Amigos de la Música . In the same year he also became professor of musical analysis at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de la Ciudad de La Plata . From 1960 he represented Juan José Castro as director of studies at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico .

Bautista composed symphonic and chamber music works, as well as around forty film scores. His composition students included Constante Abolsky , Rodolfo Alchourrón , Alcides Lanza , Horacio López de la Rosa , Amor de las Nieves Martín , Carlos Pemberton , Osvaldo Pugliese , Valdo Sciammarella and Héctor Stamponi .
