Erwin Leuchter

Erwin Leuchter (born October 10, 1902 in Berlin , † July 4, 1973 in Buenos Aires ) was a German-Argentine musicologist and conductor.

Leuchter came to Vienna at the age of fourteen and studied musicology with Guido Adler , Robert Lach and Wilhelm Fischer and philosophy with Karl Bühler , Heinrich Gomperz , Robert Reininger and Moritz Schlick at the University of Vienna from 1921 to 1925 . This was followed by studies in composition and conducting at the New Vienna Conservatory with Egon Lustgarten and Rudolf Nilius .

In the early 1930s he performed several times as the conductor of the Vienna Workers' Symphony Concerts . Together with Franz Leo Human he composed the music for Robert Ehrenzweig's Das Große Festspiel , which was performed at the opening of the 2nd Workers' Olympics in Vienna in 1931.

In 1936 he moved to Buenos Aires, where he a. a. worked as conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Asociación del Profesorado Orquestral and the Sociedad Filarmónica de Buenos Aires . His students included u. a. Carlos Kleiber and Michael Gielen . Leuchter was married to the pianist Rita Kurzmann-Leuchter .
