Karl Ottó Runólfsson

Karl Ottó Runólfsson (born October 24, 1900 in Reykjavík , † November 29, 1970 ibid) was an Icelandic composer , conductor and trumpeter .

Karl Ottó Runólfsson studied in Copenhagen and at the Reykjavík Conservatory . Afterwards he was a trumpeter for the radio and from 1939 also a teacher at the conservatory in his hometown. He also played the trumpet in the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra , founded in 1950 . He was one of the first Icelandic composers of instrumental music . His orchestral works include a symphony entitled Esja and the suite At the Road Crossing . In addition, Karl Ottó Runólfsson composed a violin and a trumpet sonata as well as choral works, songs and drama music. In Iceland he is particularly known for his songs. He was also of importance for the musical life in Iceland as the leader of various amateur orchestras and ensembles.

One of his most famous students is Egill Ólafsson . The Icelandic songwriter, actor, singer, composer and front man of well-known bands such as Stuðmenn and Þursaflokkurinn received important impulses for his later artistic career in the Boy's Brass Band, in which he learned to play cornet under Karl Ottó Runólfsson's direction.
