George Perlman

George Perlman (born May 15, 1897 in Kiev , † June 23, 2000 in Chicago ) was an American violinist, music teacher and composer.

Perlman came from a Jewish family; his ancestors were rabbis for generations. He came to Chicago with his parents in 1901. There he had violin lessons with Leon Samatini and Adolph Weidig and also for a year with Leopold von Auer . He studied law at Northwestern and DePaul University and opened a law firm in 1927. He also taught at the Fine Arts Building and soon gave up his practice as a lawyer in favor of music.

In 1933 he became editor for violin music at the New York music publisher Carl Fischer . Among other things, he published the anthologies Violinist's Solo Album and Violinist's Contest Album . He wrote most of his own compositions for his violin students. They have been published by Fischer, Boosey & Hawkes and Theodore Presser . He taught until a few months before his death. His numerous students included Barbara Sonies , Lawrence and Joseph Golan , David Arenz , Pamela Hentges and Richard Posner .
