Bernhard Kothe

Bernhard Kothe (born May 12, 1821 in Gröbnig near Leobschütz ; † July 27, 1897 in Breslau ) was a German composer, church musician, music teacher and historian.

Life

Kothe studied at the Royal Institute for Church Music in Berlin and was a student of Adolf Bernhard Marx . In 1851 he became church music director in Opole, and from 1869 to 1896 he was a seminary music teacher in Breslau. There he founded the Cecilia Society for Catholic Church Music and published Musica sacra , a collection of sacred compositions for male choirs. He also composed preludes for the organ and motets and published a singing textbook (singing teaching for higher and middle schools ), a vademecum for piano players (1880) and a practical organ school (published around 1900). He wrote several writings on music history : Music in the Catholic Church (1862), Outline of Music History (1874, 8th edition 1908) and Guide to organ literature (with Theophil Forchhammer , 1890, new edition and extension in 1909 by Otto Burkert ).
