Jørgen Liebenberg Bentzon (born February 14, 1897 in Copenhagen , † July 9, 1951 in Hørsholm ) was a Danish composer.

Live and act

After graduating from high school in 1914, he studied law at the University of Copenhagen (state examination in 1920). At the same time he received music lessons from Christy Bentzon (harmony) and Carl Nielsen (counterpoint). In Rome he received private piano lessons. In 1920/21 he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory with Sigfrid Karg-Elert (composition), Hans Sitt (score playing) and Otto Weinreich (piano). Back in Copenhagen he joined the Justitsministeriet . In 1927 he became secretary and in 1933 protocol secretary at the Reichsgericht.

He was particularly dedicated to promoting music education. Many of his works are intended for performance by school orchestras. Influenced by the youth music movement around Fritz Jöde , he and Finn Høffding founded a folk music school in Copenhagen in 1931.

In addition to numerous chamber music works, Bentzon composed two symphonies , other symphonic orchestral works, two overtures , the opera Saturnalia (1944, based on Apuleius ), orchestral variations, a symphonic trio, cantatas , choirs and songs . His Opus 1 from 1921 are variations on a theme by Chopin for piano.
