Octavio Bevilacqua

Octávio Bevilacqua (born May 17, 1887 in Rio de Janeiro , † August 23, 1953 ibid) was a Brazilian musicologist and teacher.

Life

The son of the composer Alfredo Bevilacqua and grandson of the pianist Isidro Bevilacqua studied medicine for three years before devoting himself entirely to music. He was a piano student of Frederico Nascimento and studied counterpoint and fugue with Alberto Nepomuceno .

In 1915 he became a teacher of music theory and solfège, later professor of harmony at the Instituto Nacional de Música. In 1932, he received his first teaching assignment for music history here. As a music critic, he has been writing for O Globo magazine since its inception . He was also a correspondent and collaborator for Le Ménestrel in Paris, The Journal of Musicology (Ohio), the Revista Brasileira de Música , the O Cruzeiro and the Revista da Semana . He worked as an editor from 1930–31 for the Ilustração Musical and from 1932–34 for the Revista da Associação Brasileira de Música .
