Viriato Figueira (* 1851 in Macaé , Province of Rio de Janeiro , † March 24, 1883 in Rio de Janeiro ), actually Viriato Figueira da Silva , was a Brazilian composer , flautist and saxophonist .

Viriato Figueira was a student of the flautist Joaquim Calado (1848-1880) at the Conservatório de Música in Rio de Janeiro. He is considered one of the pioneers who made the saxophone known as a soloist in Brazil . In 1866 he became a member of the orchestra of the Teatro Phoenix Dramática in São Paulo under the direction of Henrique Alves de Mesquita .

In 1877 he had his greatest success as a composer with the Polka Só pra moer , which was recorded on record by Patápio Silva in 1902 and became a classic and an integral part of the repertoire of many choro musicians. He died of tuberculosis in Rio de Janeiro , three years after his friend and teacher Joaquim Calado.
