Joaquim Calado

Joaquim Calado (born July 11, 1848 in Rio de Janeiro ; † March 20, 1880 ibid), actually Joaquim Antônio da Silva Calado, was a Brazilian flautist and composer . (His last name can also be found in the spelling Callado .) He is considered the founder of choro and was one of the most famous musicians of imperial Brazil at the time of the ruler Dom Pedro II.

Life

Joaquim Calado is considered the father of choro in Brazil. He began to learn the flute and piano at the age of 8 , probably under the guidance of his father, who himself was an active musician and music teacher. From a young age he played at dance events. At the age of 15 he composed the piece Querosene , which was a success, followed four years later by Carnaval . He became a virtuoso on the flute and composed many lundus , modinhas , polkas , quadrilles and waltzes . His composition Flor amorosa is part of the standard repertoire of many flutists in the field of choro. It was his merit to combine traditional European music with African rhythms and thus to create his own national Brazilian music style. His own group became known under the name O Choro de Calado , consisting of a flute, two guitars and a cavaquinho . All the musicians in his group had the opportunity to improvise over the harmonic structure of the pieces, a typical characteristic of choro. Joaquim Calado was a friend and patron of many musicians, including his pupil, the flautist Viriato Figueira and the pianist Chiquinha Gonzaga .
