Johann Gungl , also János Gungl (born October 15, 1818 in Schambek , Austrian Empire , † November 23, 1883 in Pécs , German  Fünfkirchen , Kingdom of Hungary ) was a Hungarian-German violinist , composer and conductor .

Life

Gungl came to Fünfkirchen with his family at the age of three, where he became a choirboy in the cathedral choir at the age of seven. He received violin and piano lessons and played for some time in the orchestra of the city's German theater. In Graz he directed the military music and played in his uncle Joseph Gungl's orchestra . From 1843 to 1845 he gave concerts in Berlin and other German and French cities. From 1845 he performed with his own orchestra in Saint Petersburg. In 1848 he became principal violinist in the Tsar's court orchestra. In 1858 he returned to Fünfkirchen and taught there from 1860 at the music school. He also worked as a church musician, organized chamber music concerts and was the conductor of the municipal orchestra from 1874 to 1878. More than 100 of Gungl's works - mainly waltzes, as well as marches and polkas - have appeared in print.

His uncle was the composer Josef Gung'l , his cousin Virginie Naumann-Gungl .
