Shawl polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Shawl-Polka is a French Polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 343). The work was performed for the first time on February 7, 1871 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna .

Remarks

The Shawl-Polka was the first of many works by Johann Strauss, which the latter put together based on the motifs of his stage works. In this case he used music from his first operetta Indigo and the 40 Robbers . The polka was even premiered three days before the operetta on the occasion of the ball of the journalists and writers' association Concordia (February 10) on the occasion of the association's carnival ball . It thus joins a series of works (opus numbers 344 , 345 , 346 , 347 , 348 , 349 , 350 and 351 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. Later on, the polka was somewhat forgotten and was rarely performed, if at all. This was also due to the fact that the composer's many compositions sometimes displaced each other from the concert schedule. There was simply an oversupply of such works.

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 3 minutes and 18 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
