Khedivial Opera House

The Khedivial Opera House , also known as the “Royal Opera”, opened on November 1, 1869 in Cairo . It was built by the Swiss architect Giacomo Lepori on the orders of Ismail Pasha , the Khedive ( viceroy ) of the Ottoman province of Egypt , to celebrate the Suez Canal , which opened in the same year . The first work to be performed was Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi . His Aida was premiered here on December 24, 1871 under the direction of Giovanni Bottesini. In the early morning hours of October 28, 1971, the building was completely destroyed by fire. In 1988 a new opera house was opened in Cairo .
