Viggo Kihl

Richard Viggo Kihl (born November 11, 1882 in Copenhagen , † July 10, 1945 in Toronto ) was a Danish-Canadian pianist and music teacher.

Kihl studied piano in Copenhagen and from 1898 to 1901 with Robert Teichmüller at the Leipzig Conservatory . In 1901 he made his debut in Copenhagen and toured Scandinavia. From 1907 he taught in London and performed in concert halls such as the Royal Albert Hall , the Queen's Hall and the Crystal Palace . In 1912 he performed on a concert tour in Europe and South Africa. At the invitation of Augustus Vogt , he came to Toronto in 1913 and taught at the Toronto Conservatory of Music until 1945 . His students included Cora B. Ahrens , Mona Bates , Agnes Butcher , Arthur Gold , Weldon Kilburn , Gwendolyn Koldofsky , Ida Krehm , Mischa Meller and Florence Steinhauer .

As a pianist, Kihl toured Canada and the USA and gave concerts in the Eaton Auditorium in Toronto every year . With the Toronto Symphony Orchestra he performed Beethoven's fourth and fifth piano concerto and Chopin's first piano concerto. He played Mozart's Concerto for Three Pianos in 1931 with Ernest Seitz and Norman Wilks and in 1934 with Seitz and Alberto Guerrero . As a chamber musician he worked with Luigi von Kunits , Boris Hambourg , Harry Adaskin and Ferdinand Fillion , among others . In 1926 he formed the Five Piano Ensemble with Norah Drewett de Kresz , Alberto Guerrero, Ernest Seitz and Reginald Stewart .

Kihl published articles on pianists, piano music and technique in various English and Canadian music magazines and wrote some piano transcriptions. He was married to the violinist Ellen Marie Jaehnigen .
