Glenn Gould and Alberto Guerrero

Antonio Alberto García Guerrero (born February 6, 1886 in La Serena , Chile , † November 7, 1959 in Toronto ) was a Chilean - Canadian composer , pianist and piano teacher. He has taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada and is best known as the piano teacher of the world-famous Canadian pianist Glenn Gould .

Tapping

A touch technique that Alberto Guerrero taught is about sensitizing the fingertips by pressing down the playing finger with one finger of the other hand and then releasing it again. The aim is to create the feeling that the keys are being pulled up, with the springing back of the key playing the central role. So it's more about letting go of the button. That also makes sense when it comes to the duration of the individual notes, for example in Gould's work, and which particularly characterizes his playing. Each tone stands for itself. With this type of tapping , the finger of the other hand corresponds when it is pulled upwards, pulling the ensemble upwards, with the weighting of the respective key.

student

As a prominent member of the music circles in Santiago and later the Toronto Conservatory of Music, Guerrero influenced generations of students in Chile, Canada and beyond. What follows is just a selection:
