Blackball is a settlement in the Gray District of the West Coast regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 20 km northeast of Greymouth in a side valley of the Gray River , in which Blackball Creek passes east of the settlement. Blackball is accessible from Stillwater on New Zealand State Highway 7 on a back road .
history
The village was named after the Black Ball Line shipping line that leased the land for coal mining. The settlement's pit was closed in 1964. To commemorate the discontinued coal mining, the Museum of Working Class History was founded in 2010 .

In the 2013 census, the town had 291 inhabitants, 11.0% less than in the 2006 census.
