Weldon Kilburn

Weldon Nicholas Kilburn (born September 9, 1906 in Lloydminster , † March 6, 1986 in Toronto ) was a Canadian pianist, organist and music teacher.

Life

Kilburn had piano, organ, cello and vocal training in his youth. From 1926 he studied piano and organ at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto with Viggo Kihl , Norman Wilks and Healey Willan and worked as organist and choirmaster at St. Alban's Church . From 1930 he was a piano teacher and voice trainer at the Royal Conservatory.

From 1936 to 1971 he accompanied the singer Lois Marshall , who became his second wife, as a singing teacher and piano accompanist. After several months of concert tour with Marshall through Western Europe, the Soviet Union and Australia in 1960, he left the Royal Conservatory and founded his own music school, where he taught singing and piano. His vocal students included Bob Bossin , Victor Braun , Constance Fisher , Glenn Gardiner , Marie-Lynn Hammond , Ilona Kombrink , Phyllis Mailing , Kathryn McBain Rose , Welford Russell and Ben Steinberg . As a piano teacher he was influenced by E. Robert Schmitz 's method , in which he had attended master classes in the 1940s. His piano students included u. a. Norma Beecroft , Howard Cass , Samuel Dolin , John Fenwick , Stuart Hamilton and Godfrey Ridout .

Of Kilburn's children, Nicholas became known as a bassoonist, Michael as a cellist, and Paul as a pianist and composer.
