Ben Steinberg

Ben (jamin) Steinberg (born January 22, 1930 in Winnipeg ) is a Canadian composer , conductor , organist and music teacher .

As a child, Steinberg sang in the synagogue choir led by his father, the cantor Alexander Steinberg , and was active as a choir conductor at the age of twelve. From 1948 to 1951 he studied composition with John Weinzweig , piano with Samuel Dolin and singing with Weldon Kilburn at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto . After giving music lessons in schools in the Toronto area in the 1950s, he studied music education at the University of Toronto and headed the music department of the Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute from 1961 to 1964 and that of the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute until 1986 . In addition, he was from 1950 to 1960 director of the music school and until 1969 music director of the Holy Blossom Temple and from 1970 music director of the Temple Sinai . From 1978 to 1981 he was composer in residence in the city of Jerusalem.

In addition to religious music (including six sacred services ) and thirteen cantatas, Steinberg also composed instrumental works. He was awarded the 1983 Kavod Honor Award of Cantor's Assembly and the composer price of the American Harp Society (for his Suite for Flute, Viola and Harp, commissioned for Suzanne Shulman excellent). He composed works for Paul Brodie ( Suite Sephardi , 1980), the Chamber Players of Toronto ( Suite for String Orchestra 1983), and Lawrence Cherney ( Invocations , 1990) and received numerous commissions from synagogues and parishes in the USA. He published a textbook for youth choirs ( Together Do They Sing , 1961) and is co-author of the One People-One Voice publication of the National Jewish Welfare Board . In 1998, the New York Hebrew Union College / Jewish Institute of Religion awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 2001 he received the Eisendrath Bearer of Light Award from the Union of American Hebrew Congregations , and in 2004 he received a lifetime achievement award from the Canadian Council for Reform Judaism .
