Godfrey Ridout

Godfrey Ridout (born May 6, 1918 in Toronto ; † November 24, 1984 ibid) was a Canadian composer and music teacher.

Ridout studied organ and counterpoint with Charles Peaker , conducting with Ettore Mazzoleni , piano with Weldon Kilburn and composition with Healey Willan at the Toronto Conservatory of Music . As a composer he became known early on with works such as the Ballade for Viola and Strings (1938), the Two Etudes for Strings (1942) and the Dramatic Symphony Esther (premiered in 1952) with the soloists Lois Marshall and James Milligan . Of his three Cantiones mysticae , the first was in 1953 at Carnegie Hall under Leopold Stokowskilisted. For the opening of the Sankt-Lorenz-Seeweg he composed the Music for a Young Prince in 1959 . The orchestral work Fall Fair was written for a concert by the United Nations in New York in 1961 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of US independence in Ottawa for the National Arts Center Orchestra George III, His Lament . His second major work for string orchestra (after the Two Etudes) is the Concerto grosso from 1974. The television opera The Lost Child was broadcast in 1975 by the CBC .

From 1940 Ridout taught at the Toronto Conservatory of Music , from 1948 until his retirement in 1982 he was also a professor at the University of Toronto . His students included Walter Babiak , Walter Buczynski , Hugh Davidson , Alan Detweiler , Ben McPeek , Welford Russell , Alfred Strombergs, and Charles Wilson . He worked as an editor for Canadian Music (1940-41) and the Canadian Review of Music and Art (1942-4) and wrote articles on Arthur Sullivan , Edward Elgar and his teacher Healey Willan. In 1964 he created an overture to Joseph Quesnel's opera Colas et Colinette in the style of the composer.

Ridout was a member and from 1966 to 1973 director of the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada (CAPAC), which sponsored a Godfrey Ridout Award for choral composition in 1989 . He was also a member of the Canadian League of Composers and an associate composer of the Canadian Music Center . His wife was the singer Freda Antrobus Ridout .
