Marion Eugénie Bauer (born August 15, 1882 in Walla Walla , Washington , † August 9, 1955 in South Hadley , Massachusetts ) was an American composer.

Life

Marion Bauer received her first training from her older sister, the pianist Emilie Frances Bauer, and from 1903 studied in New York with Henry Holden Huss . In France she was a student of Stéphane Raoul Pugno , André Gedalge , Jean Paul Ertel and Nadia Boulanger . After her return to the USA she taught at the University of New York from 1926 to 1951 and from 1940 at the Juilliard School of Music . From 1919 to 1944 she visited the artists' colony MacDowell Colony twelve times , where she wrote many of her compositions and also had contact with other important composers such as Amy Beach and Ruth Crawford .

In addition to stage and film music, Bauer composed a piano concerto, other orchestral pieces, chamber music works in various casts and songs . She has also published works on music theory. Bauer was a founding member of the American Music Guild , Society of American Women Composers , American Composers Alliance, and American Music Center ; She was also a member of the Society for the Publications of American Music and the League of Composers . Often times she was the only woman in a board position in these organizations.
