The dam is a rubble dam with an asphalt concrete inner seal (bituminous core seal). The granite and red sandstone dam was poured from May 1981 to October 1982. The initial jam lasted from December 13, 1982 to June 1984.

The flood relief is housed in a tower with a circular overflow in the storage space , to which a tunnel is connected. The installed power of the power station is 580  kW . The dam supplies between 3 and 8 million m³ of drinking water annually.

The reservoir is approx. 3 km long, 450 m wide and has a maximum depth of 60 m.

The dam has a pre- dam with a 15 m high dam made of debris.

The Kleine Kinzig dam should not be confused with the Kinzig dam near Steinau in Hesse .
