The Kinzig dam , built between 1976 and 1982, dams the Hessian Kinzig between Bad Soden-Salmünster and Steinau near Ahl . It is used for flood protection , low water elevation and electricity generation . The catchment area of the dam covers 231 square kilometers .
description
The dam has a height of 14 m and a crown length of 550 m. It is an earth dam with an asphalt concrete exterior seal. The highest measured water depth is 12 m, but only an average of 7.50 m in summer and an average of 5.50 m in winter. The pent-up water area is a maximum of 125 hectares with a lake length of 3.6 km. The Kinzig reservoir holds up to 7.2 million cubic meters of water.
The flood relief system is dimensioned in such a way that the dam would not be flooded even in the event of a flood , which occurs on average once every 1000 years. The system is a reinforced concrete structure , consisting of three weir fields with three steel dams, control pulpit, operations building, turbine , bottom outlet, fish pass, as well as an inlet and outlet fitting. The rated output of the turbine is 315 kW.
For nature lovers there is a 6.5 km long circular path around the reservoir. The “Rimbach-Farm” restaurant is reached through an underpass . A kiosk and pedal boat rental are open from May to September. The Hessian long-distance cycle route R3 ( Rhein-Main-Kinzig-Radweg ) runs along its northern bank . Under the motto In the footsteps of the late harvest rider, it leads along the Rhine , Main and Kinzig via Fulda to Tann in the Rhön .
The dam was emptied from August to November 2002 and subjected to a safety check.
