Kurt Schindler

Kurt Schindler (born February 17, 1882 in Berlin , † November 16, 1935 in New York ) was a German - American conductor and composer .

Kurt Schindler studied music in Berlin as well as in Munich a . a. with Ludwig Thuille and Conrad Ansorge . In 1902 he made his debut as a composer at the music festival in Krefeld . There he met important colleagues such as Gustav Mahler , Karl Adolf Lorenz and Richard Strauss . T. stayed on friendly terms for years. After assistant positions as a conductor at the Stuttgart Opera , the Hofoper Unter den Linden under Richard Strauss and in Würzburg , Schindler emigrated to the USA in 1905. In New York he was assistant to the choir director at the Metropolitan Opera from 1905 to 1908 . At the beginning of June 1908 he took part in the Munich Tonkünstlerfest, where five of his songs were performed in the two chamber music concerts. In 1909 he founded the 160-member MacDowell Choir (later renamed Schola cantorum ) (1909–1926), which interpreted contemporary works, ancient and folk music and was under his direction until 1920. The choir worked frequently with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and performed among other things. a. In 1912 he took part in the US premiere of Debussy's Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien .

In his work as editor of arrangements for choir and as a musicologist, Schindler devoted himself primarily to Russian, Spanish and Yiddish folk music . In 1919 and 1928–1930 he toured Europe, particularly Spain and Portugal, where he built up an extensive folk music collection.
