WH Anderson

William Henry Anderson (born April 21, 1882 in London , † April 12, 1955 in Winnipeg ) was a Canadian singer (tenor), composer, choir director and vocal teacher of English origin.

Anderson first took private singing and composition lessons in London and then studied at the Guildhall School of Music . He then appeared as a tenor soloist at various London churches, including St Stephen's Walbrook Church and St Paul's Knightsbridge Church , and for some time also at St Paul's Cathedral . He also worked with the Moody-Manners Opera ompany and was the tenor in the London premiere of André Messagers Véronique in 1903 . At times he used the pseudonym Wallace Anderson .

Chronic bronchitis forced him to give up his career as a singer and in 1910 he moved to Winnipeg, where he became known as a singing teacher, choir director and composer. As a choir conductor, he led the CNC Choral Society , which he founded , various church choirs, including the St. Andrew's River Hights United Choir (1934-1954) and the Orania Singers , a madrigal choir founded in 1936, from which The Choristers emerged in 1942 . His numerous singing students have included Herbert Belyea , Lorne Betts , Lloyd Blackman , Ronald Dodds , James Duncan , Reginald Hugo , Wallace Lewis , Morley Meredith , Maxine Miller , Gladys Whitehead and Phyllis Worth .

The composer Anderson was best known as a song composer. He wrote more than 150 songs and over 40 chorales and anthems based on texts by Audrey Alexander Brown , RH Grenfell , Nan Emerson , Constance and Sheila Barbour , Noreen Moore and others. His most successful choral work is the motet Come, I Pray Thee . He published ballads under the pseudonym Hugh Garland and arrangements of European folk songs under the pseudonym Michael Bilencko . In addition to the aforementioned motet, songs such as Hospitality and To Immortality , Sea Blue Gardens for three female voices and the Christmas carols Ane Song for the Birth of Christ and Lullaby of the Little Angels were also released on record.

Anderson's son is radio producer and critic Jeffrey Anderson , and daughter Evelyne Anderson is an actress and singer.
