John Hiles

John Hiles (* 1810 in Shrewsbury , † February 4, 1882 in London ) was an English organist and music teacher.

life and work

John Hiles was the older brother of Henry Hiles . He has held organist positions in Shrewsbury (1831–1847), Shropshire , Portsmouth , Hampshire , Brighton , Sussex and London. In 1840/1841 he performed at the Shrewsbury Festival.

Hiles arranged numerous works by other composers for the organ. In addition to organ voluntarys , Hiles also composed piano works, songs and the Anthem I am the Resurrection .

Hiles published several textbooks, including A Catechism of Harmony, Thorough-Bass, and Modulation (1872), Catechism of the Organ (1878), A Catechism For The Pianoforte Student (1882) and A Catechism for the Harmonium , as well as the A Complete and Comprehensive Dictionary of 12,500 Italian, French, German, English and Other Musical Terms, Phrases and Abbreviations (1871) and the collection Sacred Songs, Ancient and Modern: A Complete Collection of Sacred Vocal Music, by Celebrated Composers, Suitable for Home Use . All fonts have been digitized since the early 2000s or are available again as reprints.
