Marceli Popławski

Marceli Feliks Popławski (born July 22, 1882 in Pieńkówka , † May 1, 1948 in Łódź ) was a Polish composer, violinist, conductor and music teacher.

After graduating from high school in Zhytomyr, Popławski studied from 1900 to 1903, first at the polytechnic, then at the law faculty of the University of Kiev . From 1903 to 1907 he attended the city's music school, after which he continued his training in Leipzig, where he received his diploma (with distinction) as a composer under Max Reger and the virtuoso diploma in the violin class in 1908 . He later continued his composition studies with Vincent d'Indy in Paris and Alexander Glasunow in Saint Petersburg.

In 1912 he became a violin professor at the music school of the Imperial Music Society in Jarosław on the Volga. With Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz , Mieczysław Szpakiewicz , Stanisław Kwaskowski and others, he founded the Studyo Theater in Kiev in 1917 , for which he worked as a composer and music director. In 1921 he became the musical director of the National Theater in Toruń. In 1923 he took over the duties of director of the city's conservatory and artistic director of the Pomeranian Music Society (Pomorski Towarzystwo Muzyczny) as well as professor of the violin class. In 1932 he left Toruń and lived first in Równe, then in Warsaw. After the war he directed the music school in Pabianice. Most of his compositions were lost during the two world wars.
