Adela Verne (1908)

Adela Verne ( Adeline Victorine Pauline Wurm ; born February 27, 1877 in Southampton , † February 5, 1952 in London ) was an English composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

Adela Verne was the youngest daughter of the music educators Johann Evangelist Wurm and Sophie Niggli . She received her first lessons from her sisters Mathilde and Alice . Clara Schumann heard her as a small child and was so impressed that she offered to teach her like her sister Mary in Frankfurt. Her parents refused, however, and instead Clara Schumann's daughter Marie Schumann became her teacher in London.

At the age of thirteen she made her debut with sensational success at the Crystal Palace with Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto conducted by August Manns . In the following year she met Ignacy Jan Paderewski , who became her teacher and mentor. She went on concert tours through Europe, North and South America and Australia and was hailed by audiences and music critics alike as the successor to Teresa Carreño .

After an evening concert in Vienna, she invited Theodor Leschetizky to a recital in front of his students. She performed at St James's Hall Concerts with Joseph Joachim and Alfredo Piatti and toured Australia with Nellie Melba . Her chamber music partners included musicians such as singers Luisa Tetrazzini , Amelita Galli-Curci and John McCormack as well as violinists Mischa Elman and Eugène Ysaÿe . She was a regular guest at the Proms and gave a solo recital at the Royal Albert Hall .

Verne played the Australian premiere of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto, the British premiere of César Franck's Symphonic Variations and, with her son John Vallier, the first television performance of Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos. In 1952 she gave a concert with works by Paderewski on the BBC . Her last public appearance was at the Jubilee Concerts at Wigmore Hall .

As a composer, Verne emerged with songs and piano pieces, including a military march dedicated to Queen Elizabeth . Verne was married to the bassist Jean Vallier .
