Life

Like his father Louis Marsick (1843–1901) and his uncle Martin Marsick , Armand Marsick first learned to play the violin, he was a student of Désiré Heynberg (1831–1897). He studied at the Liège Conservatory with Sylvain Dupuis and Jean-Théodore Radoux . In 1897 he went to Nancy , where he became first violinist in the theater and orchestra of the conservatory and took composition lessons with Guy Ropartz . In addition to his career as a violin virtuoso, he completed his composition training in Paris with the composers Vincent d'Indy and Gabriel Pierné, who were influenced by César Franck . There he became concertmaster of the Colonne Concerts and first violinist of the Opéra-Comique .

In 1908 he moved to Athens , where he became professor of composition and director of the orchestra at the Athens Conservatory . Because of the Greco-Turkish War , Marsick left Greece and went to Bilbao , where he lived until 1927. There he became the first director of the newly founded conservatory in 1922 and founded the symphony orchestra. In 1927 he returned to Liège and worked until his retirement in 1942 at the Royal Conservatory as a professor of harmony. He founded the “ Association des concerts populairees liégeois ”, which he was in charge of until 1939.

His son Paul-Louis Marsick (1916–1969) was a musicologist, cellist and professor of harmony at the Royal Conservatory in Mons .
