Sylvain Dupuis (born October 9, 1856 in Liège , † September 28, 1931 in Bruges ) was a Belgian composer , conductor, music teacher and concert organizer.

Life

Sylvain Dupuis, who came from a family of musicians, received his musical training in the oboe class at the Liège Conservatory. In 1881 he received the Belgian Grand Prix ​​de Rome for his cantata Le Chant de la Création . Then he went on study trips to various European countries. In Paris he met Vincent d'Indy , with whom he had a long friendship. He also traveled to Bayreuth to visit the Wagner Festival there. Before 1888 he became a professor of harmony in Liège.

Dupuis made a name for himself in Liège as a concert organizer, in 1895 he directed the Belgian premiere of Beethoven's Missa solemnis . He mainly performed French works by composers like Debussy or Berlioz, but also operas by Verdi and Wagner or the composers of the Russian school. In 1896 he succeeded in bringing Richard Strauss to Liège as conductor and in 1899 Gustav Mahler , who conducted his 2nd symphony there .

In 1900 he was appointed chief conductor of the Brussels Opera La Monnaie , where he conducted several world premieres, such as L'Étranger by Vincent d'Indy , Le roi Arthus by Ernest Chausson (1903), Pepita Jimenez by Isaac Albéniz (1905) and Éros vainqueur by Pierre de Bréville (1910). He directed the Belgian premieres of Wagner's Götterdämmerung , the operas Elektra and Salome by Richard Strauss, and The Bartered Bride by Bedřich Smetana .

In 1911, Dupuis was appointed as the successor to Jean-Théodore Radoux (1835-1911) director of the Liège Conservatory, a position he held until 1925 at the age of 69. Simultaneously with this appointment he was accepted into the music department of the Académie Royale de Belgique , his successor was François Rasse (1873–1955).

Dupui's own compositions are largely from the early days of his career. He composed the two operas " Moîna " and " Coûr d'ognon " in the Liège dialect ( Walloon ), the symphonic poem " Macbeth ", a concertino for oboe and orchestra as well as chamber music and choral works.
