Anton Horner

Anton Horner (born June 21, 1877 in Gossengrün , Bohemia, † December 4, 1971 in Philadelphia ) was an American horn player .

Anton Horner was born in Gossengrün as the son of the kit maker Franz Horner and Anna, a daughter of the Gossengrün master gunsmith Wenzel Dörfler, both families are long-established in the city, the Horner since at least 1591, the villagers since 1531.

He first studied violin at the Leipzig Conservatory . He also occupied himself with playing the horn until Friedrich Gumpert convinced him to study it as his main instrument.

Horner was appointed principal horn in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Victor Herbert in 1894 . In 1901 he was a member of the John Philip Sousa Band .

In 1902 he became principal horn in the Philadelphia Orchestra .

He was a professor at the Curtis Institute of Music from 1924 to 1942 . In this role he had a major influence on the development of horn playing in the USA.

He was involved in the development of a fully equipped double horn (model "Horner-Philadelphia"). He worked with the German company Instrumentenbau Ed. Kruspe in Erfurt, who manufactured this model from 1904. These instruments were imported into the USA by Anton Horner and were widely used there.

Horner was a co-founder of the International Horn Society (IHS).

Horner was born with Alice E. Roeth († July 19, 1962 in Philadelphia ) married and had at least one daughter (Mildred Anna, 1910-1994 ).
