Rafael Ildefonso Arté

Rafael Ildefonso Arté Sagué (born September 4, 1843 in Figueres , † March 7, 1877 ) was a Spanish music teacher.

Arté came to Puerto Rico during the Spanish annexation period and stayed there after 1865. He first ran a music school in Puerto Plata and founded the Batallon de Yaque chapel in Santiago de los Caballeros in 1872 , the most important musical ensemble in the region and one with 21 students Music school. The chapel's opening concert with pieces from Robert le diable , La traviata and other works took place in 1874. His most important student was José Ovidio García , who later founded the Centro lírico cultural Rafael I. Arté . In 1909 the city of Santiago honored him with a memorial service. Arté Sagué is the father of the composer Rafael Emilio Arté .
