José Ovidio García

José Ovidio García (* 1862 in Concepción de la Vega , † 1919 in Santiago de los Caballeros ) was a Dominican clarinetist , conductor and music teacher .

Ovidio García founded the Banda Municipal de Música of Santiago in 1905 and in 1907 the Centro Lírico "Rafael Ildefonso Arté" . As its director, he taught music theory and solfège, harmony and various wind instruments. His students included Juan Francisco García , Ramón Díaz Freeman and Pedro Echavarría Lazala . His son José Ovidio "Josesito" García Vila became known as a pianist and composer, his second son Carlos Manuel García Vila as a violinist. His granddaughter Margarita Luna García also embarked on a musical career as a pianist.
