Ramón Díaz Freeman
Ramón Díaz Freeman (born January 30, 1901 in Puerto Plata , † April 29, 1976 in San Cristóbal ) was a Dominican composer, bassoonist and organist.
Díaz studied with José Ovidio García and played bassoon under his direction in the Orquesta Centro Lírico Rafael Emilio Arté . In 1921 his first composition was the waltz Flor naciente . The founder Cándido Castellanos brought him to the Orquesta Sinfónica de Santo Domingo in 1932 , and in 1941 he became first bassoonist of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional . He also worked as an organist in San Cristóbal.
Díaz composed criollas , marches, waltzes and hymns, including the hymn of the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo , an elegy, a minuet, two marches heroicas and a waltz cycle for piano under the title La leyenda de la aldea . The songs Plenilunio and Lo inocultable were created based on texts by Fabio Fiallo and Ramón Emilio Jiménez . Díaz was the first Dominican composer to compose art songs according to European tradition.
His son Ramón Díaz Peralta became known as a pianist.
