Pedro Echavarría Lazala

Pedro Echavarría Lazala (* 1894 in Santiago de los Caballeros , † August 29, 1967 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican flautist and music teacher.

Echavarría had lessons from José Ovidio García as a child and was already performing publicly at the Ateneo Amantes de la Luz at the age of fourteen . Shortly afterwards he became a member of the town band. He later went to Cuba and starred in operas and zarzuelas at Havana theaters. As the "Dominican Nightingale" he performed with great success in Mexico and Puerto Rico and gave concerts in the USA with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski . Further concert tours took him to Colombia, Costa Rica and Venezuela, among others.

In his home country he was the soloist of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional and the Orquesta de La Voz Dominicana under the direction of Roberto Caggiano . In the late 1930s he was a flautist in the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Compañía Anónima Tabacalera , directed by Julio Alberto Hernández . From 1942 to 1953 he taught flute and solfège at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música .
