The Sint Andries Canal ( Dutch Kanaal van Sint Andries ) is a Dutch waterway in the province of Gelderland . It is a short connecting canal near Maasdriel between the Maas and the Waal estuary of the Rhine .

history

The canal in what is now Gelderland was built around 1599 by the Spaniards during the Eighty Years War, together with the fortress of Sint Andries, as the largest military fortress in the Netherlands at that time. The canal was initially called Schanse Gat, later the name of the fortress named after Cardinal Andreas of Austria was transferred to the canal. Around 1856 the previously free passage through a lock in the course of the Heerewaarden closing dike was closed in order to prevent a cross flow with the different fluctuating water levels of the two rivers. After the canalization of the Meuse in the 1930s, a new connecting canal had to be built, which is 2.1 kilometers long and 45 meters wide. It connects the river kilometer 926 of the Waal with the river kilometer 209 of the Maas. The lock overcomes a usual height difference of 1.5 meters in summer.
