Rafael Emilio Arté

Rafael Emilio Arté Cruz (born April 5, 1873 in Santiago de los Caballeros , † February 2, 1970 in Mao ) was a Dominican musician and music teacher.

The son of the Spanish musician Rafael Ildefonso Arté received his musical training as a member of the military band of Puerto Plata. He has built a reputation as an inspired composer, notable saxophonist and guitarist. He also played the piano, organ, violin, cello, clarinet, euphonium and accordion. He lived as a musician in Samaná until he came to Mao in 1916 to found a municipal band there, which he directed for fifty years.

He performed as a classical guitarist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, gave concerts in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Spain and accompanied Andrés Segovia at a private concert in front of the dictator Trujillo . Like his father, he had numerous students, including his daughter Antonia Magdalena Arté (Tontón), Luis Alberti , Radhamés Reyes Alfau , Daniel Colón , Rafael Rodríguez Colón and Milito Arté .
