Antonia Magdalena Arté
Antonia Magdalena Arté ( Doña Tontón ; born July 17, 1914 in Santiago de los Caballeros , † July 4, 2000 in Mao ) was a Dominican musician and music teacher.
The daughter of Rafael Emilio Arté and granddaughter of Rafael Ildefonso Arté was best known as a pianist, but also played bandoneon and violin and also taught saxophone, guitar, flute, bass, trumpet, trombone and other instruments. She joined the Mao Municipal Chapel early, which she directed for ten years, and was the organist of the Mao Parochial Church. In the 1940s she belonged to the group of musicians around Radhamés Reyes Alfau , Otoniel Acevedo , Guarionex Aquino , Rafael Rodríguez Colón , Daniel Colón and Guaroculla Fondéur . From 1948 she directed the Esperanza Municipal Chapel for ten years.
She taught at the Salón de Estudios Mozart in Caracas and performed as a pianist in various cities in Venezuela. Her musical partners included the flautist Pedro Echevarría Lazala , the violinist Gabriel del Orbe and the pianist Julio Alberto Hernández . She has been honored many times for her work, including being an honorary citizen of Mao and Esperanza (1975 and 1999), a prize from the AMUCABA (Asociación de músicos, cantantes, bailarines y locutores, 1975) and a prize at the Los Premios La Cotorra (1986 ).
