Guarionex Aquino (singer)

Guarionex Aquino Reyes (born February 28, 1924 in Mao , † December 25, 2010 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican singer ( baritone ).

Aquino was a student of Rafael Emilio Arté in his hometown . He began his career as a singer in Santiago de los Caballeros and became known nationwide for radio broadcasts. In 1946 he won the Nuevas Voces competition held by the La Voz del Yuna radio station (later La Voz Dominicana ) and received an exclusive contract with the station.

The following year he played the late singer in the radio opera La vida de Eduardo Brito by Homero León Díaz . In 1951 he took part in the Noches de Opera in the Teatro Olimpia with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional under the direction of Roberto Caggiano . In 1954 he sang the baritone role in Gabriel Fauré's Requiem with the Schola Cantorum des Convento de los Dominicos under the direction of Rafael Bello Peguero .

In the following years Aquino performed in Curacao, Canada, Haití and Venezuela and in the USA with Casandra Damirón in Baltimore, Chicago and Washington. In 1961 he became professor of singing at the Academy of La Voz Dominicana . In 1964 he produced the program Estampas de mi Tierra here , for which he recorded songs from various provinces of the Dominican Republic, including Baní by Ramón Gallardo , Azua by Guaroa Perez and Seibanita by Julio Gautreau .

In the 1970s he worked for Radio Santa María , where he presented works by important domestic and foreign composers in its broadcasts. Since 1999 he has taught at the Ceneca , a music school run by Radio Televisión Dominicana . Aquino's son Guarionex Aquino is a jazz percussionist.
