Gabriel del Orbe

Gabriel del Orbe Castellanos (born March 18, 1888 in Moca , † May 5, 1966 in La Vega ) was a Dominican violinist.

Del Orbe was tutored by his father from the age of three and first appeared in public in 1896 in the Centro de Recreo of Santiago de los Caballeros. In the following year he made his international debut with performances in Caracas, the Teatro Nacional of Havana, the Governor's Palace of San Juan and Puerto Príncipe. From 1907 to 1907 he studied with Arno Hilf at the Leipzig Conservatory . He continued his education in Berlin and attended the violin class of Henri Marteau .

As a violin virtuoso, del Orba a. a. Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti and France. He performed in New York's Carnegie Hall (1915) and in the Berlin Blüthner Hall (under the direction of Edmund von Strauss ). He has also composed pieces for violin solo, for violin and piano and for piano solo as well as songs based on texts by Fabio Fiallo and Ramón Emilio Jiménez . The art school in his hometown was named after him, and in 2001 the violinist Pavle Vujčić founded a string quartet named after him with Militza Iankova , Zvezdana de Tabar and Pablo Polanco .
