Jean Goulet

Jean Antoine Joseph Goulet (born April 17, 1877 in Liège , † September 23, 1965 in Montreal ) was a Canadian violinist, clarinetist, conductor and music teacher of Belgian origin.

The brother of the violinist and conductor Joseph-Jean Goulet studied music at the Liège Conservatory. He worked as a printer and also played the violin in the city's opera orchestra. In 1893 he followed his brother to Montreal and became second violinist in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra , directed by Guillaume Couture . He also performed in Sohmer Park under the conductor Ernest Lavigne .

From 1897 to 1906 he lived again in Belgium, then he returned to Montreal, where he played the clarinet in Sohmer Park and conducted a small orchestra. He also directed orchestras in various theaters in the city until 1914. In 1912 he founded the Cercle symphonique St-Pierre , which he directed until 1924. As a choirmaster he worked at the churches of St-Eusèbe-de-Verceil (1921-40), Church, St-Stanislas-de-Kostka (1930-36) and St-Lambert (since 1936).

Goulet received Canadian citizenship in 1919. In 1920 he founded the Association des chanteurs de Montréal which he headed for fifteen years. He also conducted the Société canadienne d'opérette from 1922 to 1926 and the orchestra of the Variétés lyriques from 1936 to 1955 . From 1914 to 1962 he taught at Laval College in St-Vincent-de-Paul, from 1921 he also worked as a teacher for violin and orchestral instruments and head of chamber ensembles at the Collège de Montréal and at Notre-Dame College . In 1927 he was honored with the Knight's Cross of the Ordre de la Couronne . His son Charles Goulet became known as a singer, choir director and concert organizer.
