Csardas from "Die Fledermaus"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Csardas from “Die Fledermaus” is a composition by Johann Strauss Sohn (without opus number). It was performed for the first time on October 25, 1873 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein .

Remarks

The work was written a year before the operetta Die Fledermaus was premiered in a vocal version with orchestra, which, as mentioned above, was premiered on October 25, 1873, in a slightly varied version. The first performance of the orchestral version took place exactly one year to the day after the vocal performance, on October 25, 1874, also in the Musikvereinssaal under the direction of Eduard Strauss . The vocal version was then incorporated into the operetta as number 10 of the score (Sounds of Home) . The orchestral version has a life of its own. Since it was written before the operetta, it should not be regarded as a musical re-use of operetta themes. The CD recording mentioned below is based on an arrangement by Hans Swarowsky . This also advocated the thesis that the orchestral version of the Csardas had priority over the vocal version.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 4 minutes and 34 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
