Clarence Dickinson

Clarence Dickinson (born March 7, 1873 in Lafayette , Tippecanoe County , Indiana , † August 2, 1969 in New York City , New York ) was an American organist , composer and music teacher .

After studying music in the USA, from 1898 on, Dickinson was an organ student of Heinrich Reimann , the organist of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin, and continued his studies with Moritz Moszkowski , Alexandre Guilmant and Gabriel Pierné in Paris.

He was then organist and choirmaster at the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York for 50 years , founding director of the School of Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary, and founding member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO). He was also active as a concert organist and composer, author of numerous articles on church music and music history, and publisher of historical editions.

In 1977, AGO members formed a Clarence Dickinson Society . A Clarence Dickinson Memorial Organ Festival has been held annually since 2007 . The Dickinson's estate is owned by the William Caray University Library .
