Moritz Moszkowski
Moritz Moszkowski (also under the first name Maurice ) (born August 23, 1854 in Breslau ; † March 4, 1925 in Paris ) was a German composer and pianist . He is the brother of the writer and satirist Alexander Moszkowski .
Life
Coming from a middle-class Polish-Jewish family, he received his first music lessons in Breslau and Dresden . Later in Berlin he received his training at the Stern and especially at the Kullak Conservatory . His teachers here were in particular Richard Wüerst and Theodor Kullak . During his training he began to teach at the New Academy of Music in Berlin (formerly the Kullak Conservatory). Concert tours as a piano virtuoso and conductor followed in 1873. These took him all over Europe, where he soon made a name for himself as a pianist, composer and also as a teacher. a. at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory in Berlin. His most famous students included the later pianist Józef Hofmann and the conductor Thomas Beecham .
In 1897 Moszkowski left Berlin and went to Paris. In 1899 he was elected a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts. Moritz Moszkowski lived in Paris until his death, although he was denied any success here. After he had invested all his possessions in war bonds for Austria and Germany during the First World War , he was financially ruined after the First World War and the economic and political collapse of these two countries. He died in 1925.
His compositional work includes operas , chamber music , ballet music , ballads , dances , serenades and instrumental compositions as well as symphonies . In the second half of the 19th century he was considered one of the most outstanding composers; in the following years his name and his works were almost forgotten. He is considered one of the most famous representatives of so-called salon music .
Probably his best-known work is the extremely effective, very virtuoso piano piece Étincelles ( Eng . Spark) op. 36 No. 6, which belonged to the repertoire of important pianists such as Vladimir Horowitz , Michail Pletnjow , Ilya Petrov and Yeol Eum Son .
