Richard Wüerst

Richard Ferdinand Wüerst (born February 22, 1824 in Berlin ; † October 9, 1881 ibid) was a German music teacher, composer and music critic.

Life

Trained with Karl Friedrich Rungenhagen in Berlin, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (composition) and Ferdinand David (violin) in Leipzig , he settled back in his hometown after a study trip from 1845 to 1846 via Frankfurt am Main , Brussels and Paris . In 1851 his symphony in F major op. 21 was awarded first prize in a composition competition of the Cologne Musical Society.

In Berlin he worked from 1856 as royal music director, was appointed professor in 1874 and became a member of the Academy of Arts in 1877 . He also taught composition at the Kullak Conservatory and edited the Neue Berliner Musikzeitung from 1874 to 1875 . In addition to seven operas, three symphonies and a violin concerto, he wrote the book The Elementary Theory of Music and the Doctrine of the Accords , which appeared in 1867. Wüerst was also a music critic for the Berlin foreign newspaper .

Richard Wüerst was with the concert singer Franziska, geb. Weimann , married. This marriage resulted in two children.
