Ernst Alexander August George Wichert (born March 11, 1831 in Insterburg , East Prussia , † January 21, 1902 in Berlin ) was a German writer and lawyer.

Life

Ernst Wichert, son of a lawyer, attended secondary school in Pillau and later the Kneiphöfische Gymnasium in Königsberg . As a student of law at the Albertus University in Königsberg , he became a member of the progressist fraternity of Palmburgia in 1851 . After his time as assessor in Memel , he became a district judge in Prökuls (now in Lithuania ) in 1860 . Three years later he came back to Königsberg as a city ​​judge , where in 1877 (according to other sources, 1879) he was appointed senior judge at the Königsberg Higher Regional Court and received an honorary doctorate . From the three emperor year 1888 Wichert was a judge of the chamber judge in Berlin. In 1896 he went as a Privy Counselor in pension . Ernst Wichert died in Berlin and was buried in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery.

The poet lawyer - known as "poet and judge" - was co-editor of the Old Prussian monthly and co-founder of the German cooperative of dramatic authors and composers , which was launched in Leipzig in 1871 . Later renamed the Association of German Stage Writers , the oldest national association of authors in Germany now operates as the Dramatists Union .

His daughter Anna Wichert (* 1865) married the Indologist Richard Garbe in 1887 , then a professor in Königsberg and later in Tübingen.

Works

Wichert has published 34 works for the stage , 28 novels and 15 mostly multi-volume collections of short stories .

His knowledge of the social reality in the German Empire and his experiences from everyday court life flowed into his works. In the Lithuanian Stories , Wichert tells of the life and struggle for existence of fishermen and country people.

In his stage plays and prose works he met the need of the Wilhelmine bourgeoisie for confirmation of their values ​​and belief in the future of the German Empire . They form a culturally and historically authentic picture of the 19th century.
