In 1878 he completed his habilitation and worked at the University of Königsberg, initially as a private lecturer, from 1880 as an associate professor .

From 1885 to 1887 Garbe traveled to India with financial support from the Prussian state , where he studied Samkhya texts under the guidance of Indian scholars . In his book Indian Travel Sketches in 1889 he reported on his many excursions in India and Ceylon .

Garbe took the view that about seventy verses in the text (about the impersonal Brahman ) were later interpolations and marked them with small print. His view was not shared by all Indologists, but he found support from Moriz Winternitz, among others .

The Karl Baedeker Verlag won Garbe to contribute to his on the eve of the First World War appeared, prestigious India-band , for which he wrote the ethnographic and art-historical introduction.
