Algimantas Puipa

Algimantas Puipa (born June 14, 1951 in Antalieptė , Zarasai district ) is a Lithuanian film director and lecturer at the LMTA Theater and Film Faculty .

Life

Puipa began as an amateur filmmaker and as such won several awards, including at the Brno Film Festival . In 1974 he completed his studies in directing at the WGiK film academy in Moscow with the diploma film Kelioženklai . Since then he has been working on feature films and documentaries. He made over twenty films.

Puipa's films are often set in rural areas. His film A Woman and Her Four Men (1983) begins with two brothers and their father finding the third brother dead and the older brother then marrying the widow of the deceased brother. The films Ir ten krantai smėlėti (1991) and Vilko dantų karoliai (1997) were shown in the competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival . Elzė iš Gilijos (1999) was based on Ernst Wichert's story Der Schaktarp . He made the film Nuodėmės užkalbėjimas based on novels by Jurga Ivanauskaitė . It's about a young woman and her admirers, including a priest who fell in love with her while caring for her husband in a mental hospital. This film was released in March 2007 and became a commercial success after two months with over 70,000 visitors.

Puipa teaches as a lecturer at the Department of Film and Television of the Lithuanian Music and Theater Academy in Vilnius .
