Antalieptė was mentioned in a document in 1600 in the files of the court of the Ukmergė Powiat and in 1675 received market rights with the associated privileges. It was then that the first church in Antalieptė was built. In the 18th century the Carmelites came and built the Antalieptė Monastery . After the uprising in 1831 the church was closed. In the monastery there was an agricultural school , a training combination ; from 1920 to 1962 a children's home (then in Antazavė ) and from 1958 to 1976 an agricultural technical center . Like many Lithuanian cities and towns, the place had a large Jewish population . The Jews who remained when the German Wehrmacht marched in were almost completely murdered in the Holocaust.
