Adolf Wilhelm Ernst von Winterfeld (born December 9, 1824 in Alt-Ruppin , † November 8, 1889 in Berlin ) was a German military officer, writer and translator.

Life

Adolf von Winterfeld was the son of a chief forester, but early on (1836) he embarked on a military career . In 1844 he became an officer and from 1850 he attended the War Academy in Berlin for three years , where he a. a. studied modern languages ​​and literature. After graduating, he works as a freelance writer and translator, traveling a lot and giving Northern Europe a lot of time, attention and love. At first he limited himself to garrison and maneuver narratives, later humoresques and novels were added. In 1859 his "History of the Knightly Order of St. John from the Hospital in Jerusalem" was published, which earned him a lot of recognition and awards. In 1861 he was appointed chamberlain .

For his translation of the poems by Carl Michael Bellman (under the title "The Swedish Anacreon", 1856) he received the gold medal of the Swedish Academy . He translated works by the Swedish national poet into German for the first time and translated 38 epistles and 32 songs.

His own work comprises well over 100 titles.
