Robot Taekwon V ( Korean 로보트 태권 V ) is an animated film by the South Korean director Kim Cheong-gi from 1976. The film was produced by Yu Hyun-mok . It is the first Korean film to be fully restored in 2005 .

The film was released on July 24, 1976 in South Korean cinemas. Due to its success, Robot Taekwon V drew numerous sequels.

Dr. Cops is an evil scientist who seeks world domination . He creates an army of gigantic robots to kidnap top athletes and conquer the world. To counter this, Dr. Kim the robot Taekwon V. Kim Hoon, Taekwondo master and the eldest son of Dr. Kim, controls Robot Taekwon V.

Kim Hoon's friend Kim Cheol supports him in the fight as the tin can robot Cheol . All he has done is cut eye holes in a teapot that he carries on his head. Kim Hoon's friend Yoon Yeong-hee is also Taekwondoin and is able to control Robot Taekwon V.

background

The Japanese manga and anime series Mazinger Z influenced Robot Taekwon V strong. Kim Cheong-gi wanted to create a Korean hero for children. To emphasize Korean, he used Taekwondo as a fighting style.

restoration

The original film print of Robot Taekwon V was considered lost for a long time. Only one incomplete, poorly preserved copy was known. However, another copy was discovered in a Korean Film Commission department store in July 2003. In August of the same year, the Korean Film Council began a two-year restoration project and a budget of one billion won. 72 people were involved in the restoration and digitization. The version was eventually screened at the Busan International Film Festival on October 6, 2005. As a result, Taekwon V received a lot of attention in South Korea. Stars appeared at the gala to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the robot and statues were on display in Seoul . When the restored version was released in 2007, the film reached over 500,000 viewers in less than two weeks.
