Francis Maclennan

Francis Maclennan (born January 7, 1873 in Bay City , Michigan , † July 17, 1935 in Port Westminster , Long Island ) was an American opera singer (tenor) and vocal teacher.

Life

MacLennan studied in Bay City with JF Mount , in New York with Carl E. Dufft and Joseph Tamaro, and in Europe with George Henschel and Franz Emerich . He made his London debut at Covent Garden Opera in the title role of Gounod's Faust . He also sang the title role in the English production of Wagner's Parsifal , conducted by Henry W. Savage .

In 1904 he married the singer Florence Easton (1882–1955). With this he was engaged at the Royal Opera in Berlin until 1913. In Berlin he made his debut in 1907 as Turiddu in Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and in 1910 sang Renaud in Leoncavallo's opera Maia . From 1913 to 1915 both worked together at the Hamburg Opera. Both went back to the USA in 1915 and separated there.

From 1915 to 1917 he was a member of the Chicago Opera ensemble . In the American premiere of Madama Butterfly he had the role of Pinkerton. After the end of his career he worked as a singing teacher in New York.

His voice has been preserved on phonograph cylinders .
